Irregular menstruation, reproductive problems: This may be due to excess of zinc in the body
Excessive zinc intake, especially from supplements, can disrupt reproductive health by interfering with mineral balance and hormone regulation. This can lead to irregular menstruation and fertility problems.
Zinc is a mineral that your body needs to stay healthy. It helps your immune system fight disease, heal wounds, and play a role in the formation of new cells. But, did you know that too much zinc can cause problems with your menstrual cycle and even affect your chances of having a baby?
Dr Sunita Tandulwadkar, head of the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Ruby Hall Clinic, Pune, explains that zinc is essential, but too much of it, especially supplements, can harm your reproductive health.
“Zinc levels that are too high can throw off the balance of other important minerals like copper and iron in your body,” he told IndiaToday.in. These minerals are important for good blood flow and carrying oxygen in the body.
When zinc gets too much, it can block the absorption of these minerals, causing problems. For example, it can cause a condition called oxidative stress, which can damage reproductive tissues and cause inflammation.
This is especially worrisome for women with endometriosis, a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside it. Dr. Tandulwadkar explained that excess zinc can trigger chronic inflammation and pain in the pelvic area, which can make endometriosis worse.
A study published in October and conducted by doctors at various hospitals in China showed that people taking more than 14 milligrams (mg) of zinc through supplements or food were 60% more likely to develop endometriosis.
Zinc can also mess with the hormones that control ovulation and your menstrual cycle. This can lead to irregular menstruation, which can make it difficult to get pregnant.
So what is the solution? Dr. Tandulwadkar stressed the importance of balance. “Stick to a healthy, balanced diet and avoid taking zinc supplements without a doctor’s advice,” she said. Eating the right amount of zinc can help your overall health by avoiding problems like irregular periods, pelvic pain and fertility issues.
The correct amount for an adult woman is between 8 to 12 mg.
The next time you think about taking a zinc supplement, remember: A little goes a long way. Too much of even a good thing can cause problems.
