Apple’s iPhone 17 series is already generating significant buzz, with a series of leaks giving us a glimpse of what to expect from the next generation of smartphones. While Apple’s official launch is almost a year away, leaks have highlighted several key upgrades that could set the iPhone 17 apart from its predecessors. The next generation of iPhones is expected to have a number of improvements, from larger displays and better cameras to more powerful chips. Here’s everything you need to know based on the leak.

Performance upgrade?

One of the most notable changes in the iPhone 17 series is likely to be the inclusion of LTPO (low temperature polycrystalline oxide) display panels on all models. Traditionally, Apple has reserved its premium 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate and Always-On Display (AOD) features for the higher-end Pro variants. However, the iPhone 17 series is expected to bring these features to every model including the base iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Slim. This means users can expect smoother scrolling, more fluid animations, and an always-on display experience, even on entry-level versions.

Display sizes will also reportedly increase slightly across the board. Analyst Jeff Pu suggests that the base iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro will have a 6.3-inch display, up from the current 6.1-inch. The iPhone 17 Slim is expected to have a 6.6-inch display, making it a larger, more budget-friendly option.

Additionally, Apple may introduce a new design element with the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which will feature a titanium frame. The company can offer aluminum finish on other models. This premium material is expected to provide a more durable yet lightweight construction similar to the material used in the Apple Watch Ultra. Additionally, the iPhone 17 Pro Max may also feature a new “MetalLens” for the Face ID sensor, which could help reduce the size of the dynamic island for a sleeker front-facing design.

Camera upgrade?

The iPhone 17 series is expected to make major advancements in camera technology, with significant upgrades to both the front and rear cameras. For the first time, all models in the iPhone 17 lineup will reportedly feature a 24-megapixel front-facing camera, which is a significant upgrade from the 12-megapixel sensor used in previous models. This bump in resolution is expected to deliver sharper, more detailed selfies, with the front camera now centrally located within the dynamic island – a change from its current position in the left corner.

The rear camera system is where things get even more exciting. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is equipped with three 48-megapixel lenses, including a wide, ultra-wide, and a new tetraprism lens. A tetraprism lens is a type of periscope-style zoom lens that bends light several times to allow users to capture distant objects with better clarity. The feature, which has been used by some competitors since 2017, will significantly improve the iPhone’s zoom capabilities.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Slim is expected to come with a single 48-megapixel rear camera. The leaks also hint at the possibility of a mechanical aperture in one of the iPhone 17 models, allowing users to manually adjust the lens opening for greater control over the amount of light entering the camera. The feature, which will be a first for iPhones, is typically found in professional-grade cameras and could offer photography lovers a new level of creative freedom.

New chipset and more RAM?

As with every new iPhone release, Apple will introduce a new chipset. The iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Slim are expected to be powered by the A19 chip, while the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will receive the more powerful A19 Pro variant. These chips are expected to offer substantial gains in processing power, efficiency and artificial intelligence capabilities.

There has been some speculation regarding the manufacturing process of these chips. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that Apple will use TSMC’s N3P 3-nanometer technology to make A19 chips, just like the A18 chips. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to come with 12GB of RAM, while the base iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Slim are expected to feature 8GB of RAM. The iPhone 17 Pro may also come with 8GB or 12GB, depending on the final configuration Apple chooses.

Battery and charging?

While battery life details are largely speculative, the efficiency of the new A19 chips combined with the larger display should result in a more balanced power consumption profile. Users can expect the iPhone 17 series to deliver all-day battery life, although faster charging speeds and wireless charging improvements could be focal points in the upcoming models.
