Turkish film festival canceled due to ban on Daniel Craig’s gay film Queer
Mubi Fest Istanbul was canceled in protest of the local authority banning the film Queer starring Daniel Craig, citing provocative content.
Streaming platform Mubi canceled its Mubi Fest Istanbul at the last minute in protest of a local authority’s decision to ban Daniel Craig’s drama Queer. After a successful debut in 2023, the second edition of the three-day film festival was scheduled to begin on November 7.
A translated English version of MUBI Türkiye’s statement read, “As we count down to the start of MUBI Fest Istanbul 2024 – an event that took months to prepare for, announcements began weeks in advance and tickets went on sale days in advance SOLD OUT – We are sad to announce that the screening of the festival’s opening film Queer has been banned following a notice from the Istanbul District Governor’s Office.”
The statement further said, “As per the decision, the film has been banned on the grounds of “provocative content that may endanger public peace” and this ban will be enforced for security reasons. We believe that This decision is an interference that restricts art and expression. Festivals are places where art and cultural diversity come together. This restriction weakens not only one film but the entire festival. takes away from its purpose and meaning.”
The statement continued, “Therefore, as MUBI, we feel it is necessary to take a principled stance in line with the expectations of our audiences, and we regretfully announce the complete cancellation of MUBI Fest Istanbul. We all Express our gratitude to the artists.” For the understanding and solidarity of those spectators and supporters who plan to attend the festival and who we believe share in our disappointment, we will continue to maintain our stance on defending freedom of speech and artistic expression “
