Apple is set to unveil iOS 18 at its WWDC event starting on June 10. It is likely to feature advanced AI capabilities, which could be branded as “Apple Intelligence.” This new software will run primarily on the device, using the iPhone’s chips for faster processing and enhanced privacy, although some AI services will still rely on cloud computing, Bloomberg reports.

However, according to the report, the AI features will only be available on the iPhone 15 Pro models and the upcoming iPhone 16 lineup. Older models will not support the new AI functionalities. Similarly, iPads and Macs will need at least an M1 chip to access these features. The public launch of iOS 18 and iPhone 16 is expected in autumn. Take a quick look at the iOS 18 AI features based on the leaks.

“The processing requirements of AI will mean that users will need an iPhone 15 Pro or one of the models coming out this year. If they’re using an iPad or Mac, they’ll need a model with at least an M1 chip,” the report says.

The report reveals several AI features that iOS 18 will launch with. One of the highlights could be Content Summarization, which allows for quick recaps of articles and web pages in Safari, as well as meeting notes, text messages, and emails. A new Catch-Up feature will help users absorb missed notifications efficiently.

The reply suggestion feature will automatically generate detailed responses to emails and text messages, improving convenience and productivity. Siri will see a major upgrade, powered by larger language models, allowing precise control over individual app features and actions. Users can instruct Siri to delete emails, edit photos or summarize news articles, with capabilities expected to expand to third-party apps over time. Full implementation is likely next year.

Xcode, Apple’s software development environment, will receive AI enhancements similar to Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot, assisting programmers by automatically completing code. A full release for third-party developers is expected next year. The Mail app will receive improvements, including a Gmail-like feature to automatically categorize incoming messages. One feature that appeals to Gen Z is AI-created emojis, which generate custom emojis in real time, providing a wider range of expressive options than the current standardized library.

Voice memos will benefit from AI-powered transcription, a feature available on Google Pixel devices and third-party apps, enhancing its usability. The Photos app will integrate new AI capabilities in photo editing, simplifying tasks such as image enhancement and object removal. There are many other features coming on iOS 18.
