We all have that one pair of jeans that we never want to part with! This is apparel you can rely on any day, and even every day (and we’re not exaggerating on the everyday part — thank God for their sturdiness and versatility). That pair fits you like a dream. It doesn’t suffocate you with its tight size, nor does it look shabby by any inch. This is perfect; The mix you need on good and bad days; A pair that keeps you comfortably stylish and something you can wear without even thinking twice.

having a bad day? Wear it with anything and you will look quite decent when you step out. Do you have any good ones? Pair it with your favorite top and accessories and you’ll know you’re rocking it! And in Internet parlance, if you have more than one such pair, you’re probably ‘God’s favorite child.’ This iconic pair was, until a decade ago, almost everyone’s go-to skinny jeans. But that was the pre-Covid era.

Comfort above all else: Pandemic change

Post-Covid, skinny jeans died a silent death with a vigorous resurgence of baggier silhouettes. After all, being confined within the four walls of our homes during those back-to-back lockdowns had given us the comfort of cozy pyjamas. After that it seemed impossible to return to skinny jeans. Gen-Zers canceled them too.

After 2020, the denim scene completely changed to be all about mom jeans, baggy jeans, wide-legged jeans, and similar jeans. The airy and loose-fitting variants don’t bother you with skin-hugging fits, don’t highlight those extra bulges and don’t make you sweat behind the knees.

However, it is now 2024. It has been more than four years since Covid happened. Many things that the pandemic changed have returned to normal. Sanitizers are no longer an essential item to keep in our bags, weddings that once turned into intimate gatherings due to the pandemic have turned into extravagances again, and working from home is all we thought about. This will become the new normal, having faded as companies now ask their employees to return to the office.

Can we say the same for the denim scenario in the country? Umm…not really! Although skinny jeans made a comeback in 2023 with brands like Balenciaga and Miu Miu bringing them back to the runways… they couldn’t kill the craze for the casual-chic baggy silhouette in India. So, what’s trending in the jeans landscape in 2024? Hear it from denim pioneer Levi.

Industry experts are considering this

“The denim trend in India is moving towards casualization, with strong demand for comfort-driven, versatile styles. While classic fits like baggy, mom, straight and skinny jeans remain popular, consumers now prefer clothes that transition seamlessly from casual to polished looks that reflect personal style with minimal effort,” said Ameesha Jain. , MD, SAMEA, Levi Strauss & Co. told India Today.

“Although skinny jeans have seen a resurgence on international runways, Indian customers are currently opting for looser, baggier fits, driven by comfort, self-expression and body positivity,” says Jain.

The brand acknowledges the revival of skinny jeans on international runways, but the loose fit remains the primary priority in the Indian market. This doesn’t mean that skinny jeans have completely gone out of style. In fact, they still drive significant sales of Levi’s in India. Perhaps this fascination with skinny jeans, and the reluctance to push it further, is why straight-fit denim styles like the ribcage straight ankle and wedge straight models are bestsellers – neither too skinny nor too wide remain bestsellers.

Meanwhile, Indian denim label Flying Machine says there is a growing interest in jeans with more room among Gen-Zers.

“Jeans were losing share to track pants and other athletic categories, but with recent innovations it has become center stage again. The look is very androgynous and wide and the trending things include Korean, Japanese inspired baggy pants, cargo pants, carpenter pants, parachute pants and baggy jeans, paired with similar and oversized t-shirts,” Shailesh Chaturvedi, Says the MD and CEO. Arvind Fashions (parent company of Flying Machine).

The younger generation wears these choices with bucket hats, unique mobile covers, in-vogue vests and corsets.

Denim Highlights from Lakme Fashion Week

If the recently concluded Lakme Fashion Week runway announced anything, it’s that baggy jeans are the biggest denim trend of 2024. They’re all set to take you to boardroom meetings, concerts and more.

Labels like Dhruv Kapoor, Marks & Spencer, Ashish N Soni, Kanika Goyal announced the same with their denim-dominated collections. Bold tailoring paired with craftsmanship spruced up otherwise casual denim this season.

For fashion enthusiasts, there are plenty of experimental accents in the area. From glittering embellishments to a playful color palette and eccentric patches – it’s cool again to be funky with your jeans.
