Neelam opened up about the circumstances that led to her divorce from Rishi Sethia. After her marriage, she moved to a different country, where she faced significant pressure to change aspects of her life.
“I was told to wear Indian clothes, give up non-vegetarian food and alcohol. I was fine with everything. I was also asked to change my name and I did that,” she said. “I got to a point where I asked myself, ‘How am I allowing this?'”
Neelam recalled how this experience affected her sense of self, when she was publicly recognized but had to deny her identity. “There were times when I would be in the supermarket or out at lunch, and someone would come up to me and ask, ‘Are you the actress Neelam?’ And I had to say, ‘No, I’m not Neelam,'” she said.
During the episode, Neelam expressed her disappointment over the way her daughter found out about their divorce. Recalling an emotional incident, she said, “I had come from work and Ahana was with her friends. Normally, they are always jumping around, screaming and yelling. But, this time, there was complete silence.”
Neelam revealed that Ahana asked her, “‘Mumma, you never told me you are divorced.'” Neelam described the shock of that moment. “I just died. I was shocked. I had no words. Were,” she said.
She asked Ahana how she found out, to which Ahana replied, “’You’re a celebrity, so me and my friends were Googling you. The first thing that came up was that you were divorced. You were married.” Neelam admitted that this was far from the way she wanted her daughter to know about her past.
After her divorce from Sethia, Neelam found love again and married actor Sameer Soni in 2011. Both of them adopted Ahana in 2013.
