Directed by TJ Gnanavel, the film took a massive opening over the Dussehra (extended) weekend and earned Rs 31.7 crore. However, the numbers continued to decline thereafter. In case of Rajinikanth’s blockbuster film, the collections increase only after the opening day, at least during the first weekend. However, this was not the case with Vettaiyan.

Meanwhile, the makers of Vettaiyaan wanted to make a prequel to the film. During a recent media interaction in Hyderabad, director Gnanavel announced that he is deeply inspired by the theme of police encounter killing and would like to explore more on the same lines in the prequel.

“I’m more interested in developing a prequel that can delve deeper into Athiyaan’s journey. It adds layers to the existing story. They have always affected me whenever I read about encounter killings in the news. This The film challenges whether these encounters are justified or fabricated, exposing what seems straightforward often has deeper issues,” he explained to Hyderabad media over a Zoom call.

Vettaiyaan, produced by Subaskaran Allirajah’s Lyca Productions, was released on 10 October.
