Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan talked about his father Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s grief after the death of his first wife Shyama. He said that his father was depressed until he met Amitabh’s mother Teji Bachchan, whom he later married.

“My father’s first wife passed away. After that he moved to Gambhir City, in a very depressed state and all the poetry he wrote, at that time, was very dark. Was heavy with great sorrow. After a few years, he used to organize Kavi Sammelans because he could get some money. (After this his condition became serious and he became very depressed. The poems he wrote during that time were very deep and full of sadness. After a few years, he used to organize Kavi Sammelan to earn some money),” Amitabh told Aamir Khan in the quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati 16.

After this the actor told how Harivansh Rai Bachchan met Teji Bachchan at his friend’s house. “He had a friend in Bareilly and he received an invitation to meet him. My father went to meet him. During dinner, he was requested to recite a poem. But before my father could start, his friend Asked his wife to call Teji. That’s where he met him, Big B said.

Teji sat quietly in the room while Harivansh Rai recited a poem titled ‘Kya Karu Sanveda Lekar Tumhari’. As soon as she finished reciting the poem, she started crying. Even Amitabh’s father had tears in his eyes and his friend left both of them alone in the room.

After a while, Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s friend returned to the room with a garland and asked the poet to put it around Teji’s neck. Amitabh recalled, “That was the day when he had decided that she was his life partner.”

Harivansh Rai Bachchan married Teji Bachchan in 1941. They became parents to two sons, Amitabh, who recently turned 82, and Ajitabh Bachchan, who is five years younger than the actor.
