It’s been just a few days since Apple released its latest smartphone series, the iPhone 16 series. The new series introduced a new camera control button as one of the major design boosts. The button provides quick access to both the camera and its settings. In the future, it will also enable the iPhone’s built-in AI to utilize the new Visual Intelligence feature, using the camera for advanced capabilities. But Apple is not stopping. Based on the latest rumor, the company is considering upgrading the next-in-line iPhone 17 Pro models with a new button that merges the functions of both the action button and volume controls.

Tipster, @MajinBuOfficial, posting on X said that the iPhone 17 Pro may feature a single button in place of the action button and volume control.

The Action button was introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro models and continues on the iPhone 16 series. The Action button on the iPhone replaces the traditional mute switch and provides customizable shortcuts for various functions. This button allows quick, one-touch access to frequently used functions, enhancing the user experience by streamlining tasks. With its flexibility, the Action Button serves as a personalized tool, catering to individual preferences and needs.

This design choice is also practical, especially if Apple expands the action button to all four iPhone 17 models. The iPhone 17 Air, which is expected to be much thinner, will need more durability, especially to prevent bending. Reducing the number of button cutouts in the thin metal frame will make the device structurally stronger, reducing weak points and improving its resistance to accidental damage. By including fewer physical buttons, Apple can ensure that the thinner models maintain the durability standards of existing iPhones.

iPhone 17 series: what to expect?

Leaving aside the previous display specs, rumor has it that the iPhone 17 models will feature ProMotion technology, which basically means 120Hz displays. This feature was previously reserved for the Pro model and is now rumored to be included in the standard model as well to provide smoother scrolling and video playback experience.

Next year, Apple is also expected to introduce a new model, which will be called “iPhone 17 Air”. It will reportedly be thinner and will also feature a 120Hz display. It is believed that this device will be a replacement for the Plus series. So, we may not see an iPhone 17 Plus model next year. The iPhone 16 Plus could be Apple’s last Plus model, unless the company decides to change its decision based on sales demand for the existing version.
