Indian pop icon Usha Uthup released a new video song, Jago Re, showing solidarity with the movement against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata.

The nearly 5-minute-long video is a version of the song Jago Mohan Pyare, but in the context of the agitation that took place in the West Bengal capital. In the video, the 76-year-old Padma Bhushan awardee, along with a few other women, is seen holding placards demanding justice for the victim, and urging people to be aware of social evils like crimes against women.

The video features extensive visuals of the agitation by common people and doctors against the incident that has rocked Kolkata for the past one month.

Uthup’s music video was preceded by Arijit Singh’s song ‘Aar Kabe’, which is a tribute to the victimised doctor and every woman who has been abused, and calls for an end to every such atrocity in the land where Goddess Durga is worshipped.

On August 9, a female postgraduate intern was raped and murdered at the government-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in north Kolkata, triggering massive protests by doctors and the general public.

Uthup, who has expressed his solidarity with women’s causes on several occasions in the past, could not be contacted for comment.
