Megan Thee Stallion is making the 2024 MTV VMAs her night by not only hosting but also receiving critical acclaim. The 29-year-old rapper won her first Moon Person of the night for Mamushi, her collaboration with Yuki Chiba, during the pre-show on Wednesday, September 11. The song earned her the award for Best Trending Video.
Speaking to People after her win, Thee Stallion said she was “surprised” to receive the award, as she and Yuki recorded the song in a small apartment/studio in Japan. The artist said they were “just messing around” with the tune, not knowing it would become so big. “I feel so honored,” she said, expressing that she thinks she’s “probably famous.”
Speaking of her hosting duties, the rapper made a grand entrance at New York’s UBS Arena. For the red carpet, she wore a strapless black dress that featured a corseted bodice, and a mesh sheer bodycon skirt with a large cloth tied around her legs, making it look like a bouquet.
On the show, the WAP rapper paid tribute to Britney Spears during a segment that celebrated several iconic VMA performances, including the pop star’s rendition of I’m a Slave 4 U at the 2001 edition of the prestigious music ceremony. The act went down in history for several reasons, including Britney wearing a skin-revealing outfit and dancing with a snake. As a tribute to the act, Thea Stallion tried to recreate the performance with the reptile, but not everyone can be Britney, bitch! (We’re not slamming Megan, it’s a reference.)
The rapper was terrified upon seeing her own snake and asked the producers to remove the creature from there.
As soon as the snake was removed, Megan exclaimed in relief, “Oh my God.”
Thee Stallion is set to deliver a stellar performance alongside Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello, Shawn Mendes, Chapel Roan and Halsey.
