Rajasthani folk singer Mange Khan dies at the age of 49

Renowned Rajasthani folk singer Mange Khan passed away at the age of 49. He was the lead singer of the music group, Barmer Boys.

Popular Rajasthani folk singer Mange Khan passed away at the age of 49. Khan had recently undergone heart bypass surgery. He was the lead singer of the famous Manganiyar trio, Barmer Boys, which featured in season 3 of Coke Studio on MTV India.

Amraas Records released a statement in memory of Mange Khan. It read: “With deep sorrow and aching hearts, we share the sad news of the sudden demise of Manga (Mange Khan), the lead singer and voice of Amraas Records’ band, Barmer Boys (sic).”

The note further said, “Manga, as he was fondly called, was one of the finest singers of the Manganiyar community, at the peak of his career and with decades of concerts, sold-out shows and thunderous applause ahead of him. His voice danced effortlessly to the high register demanded by Manganiyar music. It was powerful yet melodious, like the singing of birds.”

The note further read, “We will miss hearing it live, we will miss his smile, we will miss our friend Manga.”

The last lines of the note are, “He has performed over 200 concerts in 20 countries, including some of the most prestigious festivals in the world – Roskilde (Denmark), Klokkenflap (Hong Kong), Winnipeg Folk Festival (Canada), Music Meeting (Netherlands), Ofest (Macedonia), Respect Festival (Prague), FMM Signs (Portugal), Festival de la Cité (Lassaune, Switzerland), Ziro Music Festival (India) etc.”

Known for his unique voice, Mangay Khan helped spread Rajasthani folk music around the world. He belonged to the Manganiyar community of Rajasthan. His music is a blend of Sufi, Rajasthani folk and Hindustani classical music dating back to the time of traditional court musicians who performed for Muslim rulers in North India.
