There’s a scene in The Perfect Couple in the very first episode. The camera pans to what appears to be a posh condo. The clinking of even more expensive champagne in expensive glasses is heard as we meet Greer Garrison Winbury (Kidman) and her wealthy husband, Tag (Liev Schreiber). They have three sons – Thomas (Jack Reynor), Benji (Billy Howle) and the youngest, Will (Sam Nivola). We are told that Benji is marrying the love of his life, Amelia (Eve Hewson).

While it’s celebratory, there’s an icy layer of impending doom lurking in the background as we begin to meet more characters and learn about Greer and her chaotic family. And then, of course, there’s a murder. There has to be a murder at the very beginning if you want to hook your audience.

But The Perfect Couple is more than a simple murder mystery series. It’s well-crafted and juicy, thanks to its sharp writing and brilliant direction. The characters feel real, the cast shakes you to the core. You don’t know who to feel sympathy for and who to hate. Think The White Lotus meets Big Little Lies and Dynasty.

Director Susanne Bier gives us a chance to see the story from multiple perspectives. Sometimes we see it from the perspective of the dead; other times from the perspective of people who look like they have blood on their hands from what happened.

Nicole Kidman’s star-power is enough to pull you into the episode and keep you immersed in it. Ishaan Khatter also gets a chance to play a character that is probably closest to his real life. The interrogation scenes are far from clichéd and at least provide some humour as expected.

The Perfect Couple is one of the best shows of the year and a great show to binge-watch on a gloomy weekend.

The Perfect Couple is now streaming on Netflix.

3.5 out of 5 stars.
