Trigger warning: This article contains references to sexual abuse.

Malayalam actress Suparna Anand, who rose to fame for her role in the film Vaishali, has shared her ordeal. In a recent interview, the actress shared her bitter experiences while working in the Malayalam film industry. She also expressed surprise at Mohanlal and Mammootty’s silence over the findings of the Hema Committee report.

According to Onmanorama, she said, “It is irrelevant to question why people react after a period of 34 years. I worked in the Malayalam film industry for only four years. But I had to quit it because of the pressure within the film industry. Casting couch has existed since time immemorial.”

Suparna criticised actor-turned-politician Mukesh for not resigning from the post of MLA despite being accused in a sexual harassment case. She also supported the women who came forward and raised their voice during the Hema Committee report controversy.

Meanwhile, Mohanlal resigned from the post of President of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) on August 27. He along with the entire committee resigned from their posts following serious MeToo allegations against some prominent Mollywood personalities.

Following this, AMMA released a statement which read, “Following the release of the Hema Committee report, several members of the Administrative Committee of the AMMA organisation faced scrutiny in the social, visual and print media regarding sexual allegations. In view of these allegations, the current Governing Body of AMMA has decided to take moral responsibility and has resigned en masse.”

The statement further said that a new governing body will be elected in the next two months. In the meantime, the activities of AMMA will continue temporarily in the presence of the outgoing governing body.
