Shankar and Kamal Haasan reunited on the sequel to their 1997 cult hit, Indian, and presented the film to the audience on July 12, 2024. The film failed to live up to expectations and turned out to be a massive flop at the box office. As per the pre-decided norms, the makers decided to premiere the film in the digital world in Tamil and Telugu 4 weeks after its release. However, in a shocking turn of events, the Hindi dubbed version was also given a digital release in less than 6 weeks.

And now, Pinkvilla has exclusively learnt that the Multiplex Association of India has sent a legal notice to the team indian 2 For violating OTT rules. “The Multiplex Association of India has laid down certain rules for the theatrical release of films in Hindi. As per the rules producers have to follow a strict OTT window of 8 weeks and those who do not follow the laid down guidelines will not get a release in the top 3 national multiplex chains – PVRInox and Cinepolis. The team of Indian 2 aka Hindustani 2 agreed to the said guidelines and got a release in national chains,” shared a source.

“But the Multiplex Association was shocked to learn that the Hindi version of Indian 2 is now streaming on Netflix, much before the stipulated 8-week period. In an ideal world, Hindustani 2 should have streamed on September 6, but it is already on air and this has not gone down well with the power players in the exhibition sector,” the source added.

many people Multiplex Association of India As other exhibitors too have independently confirmed this development to Pinkvilla on the condition of anonymity. More details are awaited, but the Multiplex Association of India wants to send a strict message to all producers to adhere to the 8-week window. “If one producer escapes, it gives many more a chance to do so. The idea is to set an example that such acts will not be taken lightly. MAI is very clear on maintaining an 8-week OTT window for all films releasing in North India,” the source concluded.

Meanwhile, Indian 3 is set to release in 2025.
