Google says Gemini isn’t just for English speakers, announces support for 45 languages in 200 countries

At the Made by Google event, Google unveiled several new products and AI features. One of the highlights was the announcement that Gemini is now available in 45 languages in more than 200 countries and regions. Google also took a subtle jab at Apple, pointing out that Apple Intelligence is only launching in the US and will initially be available only in English. The move appears to target a limited audience, in contrast to Google’s broader global approach.

Sameer Samat, President of Android Ecosystem at Google, took the stage to highlight this milestone, saying Gemini is not just for English speakers. “Gemini is now available worldwide, far beyond English speakers and a single market,” said Samat. His statement underscores Google’s commitment to inclusivity and its ambition to provide cutting-edge technology to users globally.

This announcement is particularly notable as it comes at a time when AI-powered virtual assistants are becoming increasingly central to the smartphone experience. By supporting a variety of languages, Google ensures that users from diverse linguistic backgrounds can take advantage of Gemini’s capabilities, making the technology more accessible than ever.

This global rollout is also a stark contrast to Apple’s approach to AI. Apple’s new AI model, Intelligence, is expected to launch later this year, but will initially only be available to English speakers in the US. Google’s decision to launch Gemini globally with multilingual support from the start establishes it as a more inclusive and widely accessible option.

Gemini’s compatibility with older Android devices is another important aspect of this launch. Unlike many technological innovations that are often limited to the latest flagship devices, Google has ensured that a wide range of users can access Gemini, reinforcing its commitment to providing high-quality technology to everyone.

Apart from the AI features, Google also announced the new Pixel 9 series – which includes four models namely Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Notably, this was the first time Google launched a Pixel foldable phone in India. Along with this, Google also launched the Pixel Buds Pro 2 as well as the Pixel Watch 3.
