Actor Ranjeet said ‘honour killing is not violence’, he was brutally trolled
Actor-director Ranjit watched his film ‘Kavundampalayam’ with the audience in Salem, Tamil Nadu. While talking to the media, he made a shocking statement about honor killing.
Actor-director Ranjith made a shocking statement defending honour killings in Salem, Tamil Nadu on August 9. Speaking to the media, he said that caste-based honour killings are not violence. He further said that it is parents’ way of showing their care for their children. His film ‘Kavundampalayam’ released in a limited number of theatres in Tamil Nadu on August 9.
Ranjith had gone to Karuppur in Salem to watch ‘Kavundampalayam’ with the audience. He met the media outside a theatre in Karuppur, where he was asked about honour killing.
Defending the act of honour killing, he said, “Only parents know this pain. If a bike gets stolen, won’t we go and see what happened? Parents for whom life means their children get angry and show it. It is not violence, it is just their care for them.”
This statement on honour killing is a big blow especially at a time when people are appealing to the authorities to make a new law for honour killing.
This is not the first time Ranjit has landed in trouble for his controversial statements. Earlier, he had spoken about Happy Streets (an event in which several shows are held on the street) and said that women wearing short clothes dance in front of everyone. Even then he was criticised for his regressive views. His films usually show women as an object and portray them as women who maintain the culture.
In his latest release ‘Kavundampalayam’, the actor-director addressed controversial topics like caste-based violence and parental control over children. The trailer has dialogues like, ‘Mannula Vivasayam Pannardhu Mukkiyam Illa, Ponnula La Vivasayam Pannanum (We don’t need to do farming, we need to get women pregnant)

‘Kavundampalayam’ was scheduled to release in February this year. It was postponed to August due to the controversies surrounding the film. Ranjith claimed that it was an A certificate film passed by the Central Board of Film Certification.
Speaking in Salem, he said that some people were working against him. Ranjith also said that the film was made with good intentions.
