The Indian Embassy in Japan on Friday issued a major earthquake advisory for Indian nationals living in Japan, urging them to be prepared for natural disasters after the powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck on Thursday.
Experts say that a ‘big earthquake’ may occur in Japan in the coming days. An earthquake with a magnitude of more than 8 is called a big earthquake.
Furthermore, the Embassy has asked citizens to follow the guidelines laid down by the Japanese authorities and keep an eye on the Embassy’s website and social media handles for updates.
The Indian Embassy in Japan said in a post on Twitter, “The Government of Japan has issued an advisory on preparedness for natural disasters. All Indian nationals in Japan are advised to follow the advisories issued by the Japanese authorities and keep a close watch on the website and social media handles of the Indian Embassy in Tokyo.”

The embassy also shared the advisory document, which said the Japan Meteorological Agency has issued an emergency bulletin on the Nankai Trough Earthquake (Major Earthquake Warning).
The Japanese government held disaster response meetings, established a state of alert, and urged citizens to confirm their earthquake preparedness on a daily basis.
In addition, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) issued an advisory and established a disaster management headquarters (DMHQ) on August 8 to enhance preparedness in connection with the mega-earthquake advisory (Nankai Trough Earthquake Additional Information) issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency.
TMG’s advisory estimates that if a major earthquake occurs, damage in Tokyo would be limited to seismic magnitude 6 or less, and a tsunami might occur that would impact island areas.
As per the advisory, all Indian nationals in Japan are advised to follow the warnings and instructions issued by the Government of Japan and local governments from time to time.
The Japanese government has also assured that there is no need to panic and this advisory is only to enhance preparedness.
Two powerful earthquakes struck off Japan’s southern coast on Thursday. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the first quake was of magnitude 6.9, followed by a second quake of magnitude 7.1.
