‘Andhagan’ review: Directed by Thiagarajan, this film starring Prashanth and Simran stays true to its original film ‘Andhadhun’. The casting of the film is its biggest strength.

Andhagan Review: Prashanth and Simran starrer ‘Andhagan’ released in theatres on 9 August.

Release date: August 9, 2024

In 2018, director Sriram Raghavan’s ‘Andhadhun’ became a hit across languages and garnered a lot of accolades. Soon, its remake rights were up for grabs. Director and actor Thiagarajan acquired the Tamil remake rights and after five years, the Tamil remake ‘Andhagan’ has finally hit the theatres. The film is quite special as it also marks the return of top star Prashanth to Tamil cinema.

Pianist Krish (Prashanth) is busy with his daily chores despite being blind. His mastery of playing the piano gets him a job. One day, he is invited to actor Karthik’s (Karthik) house for a private concert for his wife Simi (Simran) on their wedding anniversary. However, Krish becomes a witness to Karthik’s murder, which is committed by Simi and her lover Inspector Mano (Samuthirakani).

Simi and Mano try to cover up the murder but they get entangled in a web of problems that also involves Krish. What happens after that forms the rest of the story of ‘Andhagan’.

Remaking a hugely successful film is no easy task. Comparisons are inevitable, and creating the same magic as the original is a tough job. ‘Andhadhun’ is one such film that kept everyone glued to their seats. In 2021, the Telugu remake, ‘Maestro’ released and received a good response. ‘Andhagan’ took a very long time to come, but it is still a faithful remake that gets most things right.

Director Thyagarajan has kept the essence of ‘Andhadhun’ intact and has pulled off a brilliant performance with a great cast. His creative decision to include old hit actors like Karthik, Prashanth and Ilaiyaraaja makes ‘Andhagan’ grounded.

His son and actor Prashanth (fondly called Top Star by his fans) has given a brilliant portrayal of Krish which brings back old memories. The actor has been away from Tamil cinema for a while now and ‘Andhagan’ is truly the comeback he deserved. From being one of the top heroes of Tamil cinema to fading away due to several issues, Prashanth’s career has been full of ups and downs. In ‘Andhagan’, he has proved himself once again.

‘Andhagan’ is largely a scene-by-scene remake, which is why it remains effective. Re-casting Simran in Tabu’s role is a great choice. Her performance reflects the dark nature of the role and makes it captivating. Priya Anand is ideally cast in the role of Radhika Apte, and her fiery character is tailor-made for her.

‘Andhagan’, which has been in the making for many years, looks fresh because of its performances and production values. For those who haven’t seen ‘Andhadhun’, the Tamil remake is a great thriller with many ups and downs. However, the graphics are a bit poor and could have been better.

Veteran actor Karthik, in his over-the-top role, reminds us of his films from the 90s. Samuthirakani’s Mano was quite entertaining, and it’s great to see him in a different role. However, Vanitha Vijayakumar has overdone her acting. Yogi Babu, Urvashi and KS Ravikumar have made their characters entertaining with their performances.

‘Andhagan’ is one of the few remakes that stands up to its original film. Despite a few flaws, such as blaming and shaming women for infidelity, the film turns out to be an entertaining one.

‘Andhagan’ gets 3 stars out of 5.
