A very special person will be there to cheer on the US women’s water polo team as they compete in the pool at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Earlier this year, famous American rapper Flavor Flav announced a five-year sponsorship deal, and has now traveled to Paris to cheer on the women as they compete for their fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal.
Flavor Flav becomes hype man for US women’s water polo team
On Thursday, while visiting the Team USA House at the Paris Games, Flavor Flav stopped by for a high five, a hug and a handshake. The partnership, announced on July 1, includes a substantial financial grant to help the women’s team work toward winning an Olympic gold medal at Paris 2024.
Flav, an original member of the hip-hop group Public Enemy, is in Paris for his formal role as the official endorser of USA Water Polo. The deal came after Flav and US captain Maggie Stephens connected on Instagram in May.
With his usual boundless enthusiasm, Flav, 65, is embracing his new responsibilities. The rapper said in his video, “I’m so ready, man. … I’m so excited about this game right now. I wish I was playing it. I’m just excited myself right now to ask him to join the team.”
How did the deal between Flavor Fave and the U.S. Women’s Water Polo Team come about?
Stephens took to social media to draw attention to the financial challenges that most Olympic athletes face. He also praised his teammates and expressed his passion for his challenging sport. After being made aware of the issue by Flav’s management, the rapper promised to help in a comment on Stephens’ post.
Following that conversation, Flav, whose real name is William Jonathan Drayton Jr., and USA Water Polo reached a unique sponsorship agreement. As part of the five-year deal, Flav promised to work with the women’s program on an undisclosed financial contribution and work together on social media to promote the emerging sport.
Thus Flav became the official team sponsor and their endorser. Flav, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Public Enemy in 2013, prepared for his trip to Paris by joining them to train in the pool and scoring against goalkeeper and two-time Olympic champion Ashley Johnson.
