Ranbir Kapoor on his parents’ relationship: I heard them fighting as a child
Ranbir Kapoor shared details about his strained relationship with his late father Rishi Kapoor in an interview. Despite the distance, Ranbir acknowledged his father’s love and the emotional journey he experienced. He also revealed that his wife Alia Bhatt is his best friend.

Ranbir Kapoor recently opened up about his complicated relationship with his late father Rishi Kapoor. In an interview with Nikhil Kamath on his YouTube channel, Ranbir shared that despite his privileged background, there was always a distance between him and his father.
Recalling his childhood, he told how he used to sit on the stairs of his bungalow and listen to his parents fight. He said, “There were a lot of fights between my parents. We lived in a bungalow, so I spent most of my childhood sitting on the stairs and listening to them fight. I was always scared and stressed.”
Ranbir admitted that he was very scared of his father and never saw the colour of his eyes. He also revealed that when he returned to India, Rishi Kapoor took his car to keep him grounded.
He said, “I believe my father was an angry man, but he was a good person. He was someone who loved his family, work, food and wine. He was a very open person. He could express himself openly.”
Ranbir said that his father’s volatile nature always scared him. “He never shouted at us, never raised his hand on us, but he had such a volatile temper around us that I was always scared,” the ‘Animal’ actor said.
He spoke about how his parents resolved their differences when Rishi was diagnosed with cancer and how his mother selflessly served his father.
Ranbir believes that men of his father’s generation were afraid of their weakness and never expressed their love openly.
Ranbir said, “I think that generation of men is scared of vulnerability. He never even confessed his love to me. He could never hold my hand. He did hug me, but it was more of a pat than a real hug. Maybe I am blaming his generation, but I don’t know. He used to stay away from me a lot. I knew he loved me a lot and cared for me a lot, but there was a distance.”
In the same interview, Ranbir also told how Alia has changed for him. He said, “Alia has changed more for me than I have changed for her. I am accepting it, but I should do something about it, I should change a little.”
Calling Alia his best friend, the ‘Brahmastra’ actor said, “Watching movies together, laughing, talking… that’s romance.”
He said, “I am lucky that I am married to someone who is my closest friend. We can actually talk, laugh, share things like she is my best friend. I am really lucky in that regard. Alia is a really wonderful person. She is very colourful. She is 11 years younger than me. It is a lot of fun.”
