Fresh leak confirms Pixel 9 naming change, Google will likely follow iPhone naming scheme
Google’s upcoming Pixel 9 series may have a naming similar to Apple’s iPhone lineup. Leaked renders suggest four models with different designs and camera configurations.
As we get closer to Google’s Made by Google event 2024, the curiosity around the next-gen Pixel 9 is growing. The event is scheduled to take place on August 13, 2024 at 10 PM IST. Google has also released a teaser for the upcoming Pixel 9 Pro and confirmed the launch of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold – a rebranded version of the Google Fold Google has decided to make its Fold series a part of the lineup. However, that’s not all. The Pixel 9 series is also expected to include the standard Pixel 9 and a new variant, the Pixel 9 Pro XL.
Rumours about Google planning to introduce four Pixel models have been doing the rounds for a while now. And one of the key renders suggests that this time the lineup will include the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and the new Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Further cementing these suggested names of the Pixel 9 lineup, a new leak by tipster Evan is going viral. In his recent post on X, Blass has shared a render on X that shows the Pixel 9 series. The photo shows three Pixel phones namely- Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 XL and gives details about the naming structure, design, and bezel structure of the new models.
According to the photo, the Pro models of the Pixel 9 series will sport thinner and more uniform bezels, while the standard Pixel 9 has slightly thicker bezels. The camera configuration also appears to differ across models, with the Pixel 9 featuring a dual-camera system and the Pro variant equipped with a triple-camera setup.
Seeing the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro being similar in size is also creating confusion, as every year Google launches its Pixel Pro slightly larger than the base Pixel. Well, if rumours are to be believed, Google might adopt a naming strategy like Apple’s iPhone lineup. Under this new naming scheme:
– The Pixel 8 will be replaced by the Pixel 9 Pro.
– Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL.
Google is likely to introduce the new Pixel 9 as a more affordable option, similar to Apple’s strategy with the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16.
While these naming conventions are still speculation—and all we know is that the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro Fold are definitely coming—the renders point to Google’s potential strategy to diversify its lineup and offer consumers more options. The most affordable model, presumably the Pixel 9a, is expected to launch next year, further expanding the Pixel family.
