Experts warn how high humidity can impact bone and joint health

Experts say that due to increased bacterial activity and humidity during the monsoon season, the risk of infection and joint pain increases. Doctors recommend taking proper precautions to reduce these risks.

Knee pain can be caused by a sudden injury, an overuse injury, or an underlying condition such as arthritis.

The risk of infection increases during the monsoon season due to increased bacterial activity. If there is a wound or cut in the body, bacteria or germs can enter the bloodstream and bones, increasing the risk of infection.

Dr Neeraj Godara, Consultant, Hand, Wrist & Reconstructive Microsurgery, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dwarka, highlights the need for caution during this time.

“The activation of microorganisms can make wounds and cuts prone to infection, leading to bone infections. Moisture softens the skin, making it more vulnerable to damage, which acts as a gateway for bacteria. It can also weaken the body’s immune system, making it less effective at fighting infections,” Dr Godara explained.

With the onset of the monsoon season, many people may experience joint discomfort, muscle stiffness, and injury pain due to rapid changes in temperature, rainfall, and air pressure.

High humidity levels make blood circulation in the body difficult, as humidity causes the blood to thicken and increases blood pressure in the blood vessels.

Dr Varsha Bhatt, Rheumatologist at Apollo Clinic, Wanowrie, Pune, said that during monsoon, people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis (inflammation of the joints) may experience even more inflammation, especially if they have suffered from diseases like dengue or chikungunya.

Post-viral arthritis can last from a few weeks to 6 months. In some cases, it can also become chronic, in which case long-term medication may be needed.

Flooded areas are particularly problematic, as they may harbor bacteria that contaminate wounds and increase the rate of infection.

“Avoid walking barefoot in these areas as they can cause cuts, which facilitate entry of bacteria,” advises Dr Godara. The expert said wearing protective clothing and maintaining overall hygiene are important steps to prevent infection.

Dr. Bhatt said that avoid taking medicine on your own as it can be harmful. If you have joint pain, you should immediately consult a doctor.

In case of severe joint and muscle pain, one should consult a health professional to rule out infection.
