Most scuba divers believe they rarely touch delicate marine ecosystems, yet underwater observers tracking hundreds of tourists found that more than 40 percent of their physical contacts caused visible damage to living coral structures.Research published in The Conversation by marine scientists and dive professionals showed that recreational divers make physical contact with a reef on average once every four minutes. When surveyed immediately after returning to the boat, the same divers underestimated their actual contact frequency by about five times, while many were completely unaware of the collisions they had caused.Researchers spent hundreds of hours following, observing and surveying 732 recreational scuba divers at world-famous marine sites in Indonesia and the Philippines. The investigation aims to measure the direct environmental impact of marine ecotourism at a time when global coral systems are facing unprecedented stress from climate change, coastal development and human activity.Every year, millions of people dive beneath the surface to experience coral reefs first-hand, generating vital income for coastal communities and helping tourists understand why these ecosystems matter. However, the study highlights a growing conservation challenge, as a single misplaced feather, hand or camera is putting already enormous pressure on the reefs.

The survey data revealed that there is a sharp gap between how divers view their underwater skills and how they perform in the water. Of the survey participants, 69 percent rated themselves “above average” in avoiding intentional reef contacts, while 86 percent classified themselves “above average” in avoiding accidental bumps.Despite these high self-assessments, more than 40 percent of all physical touches recorded resulted in direct damage, including broken coral branches or clouds of sediment on live coral tissues. The study found that divers who made contact most often were also the most confident about their buoyancy control and underwater swimming technique.The authors noted that this pattern fits the Dunning–Kruger effect, a well-established psychological phenomenon where individuals with low skill levels fail to recognize their limitations. Because most damaging strikes are accidental and occur out of the diver’s direct sight, individuals rarely realize they are causing harm, removing any perceived need to fine-tune their technique or adjust their position in the water column.

Social signals and large marine encounters
Underwater behavior was also strongly influenced by social dynamics and environmental triggers at the dive site. The researchers recorded clear evidence of social contagion, a process where a diver touches or rests on a rock, causing nearby swimmers to unconsciously copy the action. This subtle peer influence reshaped what was considered acceptable underwater, creating social norms that directly harmed sensitive marine life.Agitation also played a major role in reef damage. Viewing large or charismatic species such as sharks, turtles and manta rays significantly increased the likelihood of accidental and intentional reef touching. During these extreme encounters, divers focused solely on getting a close-up look or taking photographs, drifting dangerously close to the fragile sea floor.Equipment choices further increased the collision rate. Divers who carried underwater cameras, used metal dirt sticks to balance on the seafloor, or wore gloves were consistently observed to have more frequent contact with the reef than those who dived without additional assistive equipment. While some dive locations have introduced local conservation regulations prohibiting these items, such measures are often unpopular within the recreational diving community.
Practical Steps for Marine Tourism
The researchers emphasized that reef damage caused by scuba diving is not an inevitable consequence and can be addressed through better operating regulations, targeted training, and industry standards.Reducing group sizes during dives, establishing appropriate viewing distances around key marine animals, and implementing clear restrictions on non-essential gear such as gloves or stabilization rods can immediately reduce collision rates. Dive guides and instructors also play a central role by modeling good behavior, giving thorough safety briefings before the dive, and providing honest feedback after the dive to help divers recognize poor buoyancy control.Formal conservation standards are already proving effective in preventing damage. The study highlighted that dive centers operating under Green Fins certification, an international initiative promoting sustainable marine tourism practices, have deliberately recorded fewer reef contacts, particularly among high-performance dive businesses.However, the authors concluded that broader conservation success will ultimately depend on changing expectations across the entire marine tourism industry. Understanding the psychology behind human behavior underwater and helping divers accurately assess their own skills is one of the most effective ways to protect fragile coral ecosystems for the future.
