Russia launched another wave of missile and drone attacks across Ukraine overnight, killing at least two people and wounding several others, as the war showed no signs of abating ahead of a high-level meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara. The latest attack came just a day after 30 people were killed in one of the deadliest Russian attacks on Kiev in recent months. The renewed attacks underlined Moscow’s continued pressure on Ukraine, even as NATO leaders prepared to discuss military support, regional security and the future course of the war.Kyiv was one of the main targets overnight. AFP journalists in the Ukrainian capital reported hearing a powerful explosion before air raid sirens were activated, prompting Russia to step up the bombardment, followed by at least four more explosions.Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said a missile strike caused a fire in warehouses in one district, while another strike caused a fire in another non-residential building in the city.Ukraine’s State Emergency Service later said that two people were injured in the capital. The heaviest casualties came from the southern Mykolaiv region, where a mother and daughter died after being hit by aerial bombs directed by Russian forces, according to regional military chief Vitaly Kim. Two other people were injured in the same attack. The Russian attacks also affected several other regions of Ukraine. Four people were wounded in the eastern Dnipropetrovsk region after drone and artillery attacks, officials said.In the southeastern Zaporizhia region, two more people were wounded in another Russian attack, according to the head of the regional military administration.Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, was also hit by the attack, with Mayor Ihor Terekhov saying two people were injured.Ukraine also continued to target Russian territory. In Russia’s Saratov region, Governor Roman Busargin said one person was killed in a Ukrainian drone strike. The latest tensions come ahead of a scheduled meeting between Trump and Zelensky on Wednesday, where the war is expected to be discussed along with broader NATO security priorities.Zelensky has repeatedly urged Ukraine’s Western allies to provide more air defense systems and interceptor missiles, warning that the country is lacking the equipment needed to counter Russia’s growing use of ballistic missiles. While Ukraine continues to intercept large numbers of Russian drones, officials say Moscow has increasingly relied on ballistic missile strikes against Kiev, putting additional pressure on the country’s already overstretched air defense network.
