“This is not just about Kuljeet Singh, this is probably about the biggest massacre that has happened in our country since independence,” he says, before recounting Punjab’s turbulent history including the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, militancy, Operation Black Thunder, President’s rule and political assassinations.

He describes violence as a cycle that continues when those in power fail to act. He says in the scene, “This is a vicious cycle of violence that the powerful use for their agenda and it will never stop. It will continue until we step in and set an example.”

“We are accountable here, sir. We are accountable to our conscience. We are accountable to those families.” People whose loved ones have been left abandoned and burnt (We are accountable to the families whose loved ones were declared unclaimed by these people and cremated). We are accountable to the family of Jaswant Singh. And yes, we are accountable to Jaswant Singh,” he says.

The monologue ends with an appeal for accountability, as the officer says that he is accountable not only to the victims’ families but also to his own conscience.

Why is this scene going viral

The clip has since been widely shared on social media, with a widely shared caption claiming, “This scene is the main reason for the film to be removed from OTT.”

Reactions to X ranged from praise for the performances to pointed questions about the film’s removal. One user wrote, ‘Arjun Rampal has the same intensity in different roles. Satluj (sic),” while another took aim at the streaming platform’s explanation for pulling the film, dismissing the reference to “due process” and shared the visual with the comment, “Watch this viral ignited monologue of Arjun Rampal posted officially on the channel’s Instagram page.”

Similar allegations were made in reactions on Instagram. One user wrote, “The sudden removal of ‘Sutlej’ from OTT proves that the system is still afraid of the story of Shaheed Jaswant Singh Khalra ji. If you think our voices should not be silenced, hit the share button now. Let’s talk in the comments – why do you think this keeps happening to Punjab?” Another simply praised the ensemble cast, calling the film “a gem” and saying that “each actor did their job to perfection.”

Arjun Rampal has an important role in the film

In the film, Rampal plays the CBI officer investigating the disappearance of Jaswant Singh Khalra, and also serves as the film’s narrator, a role that has placed his performance, and particularly this monologue, at the center of current conversations surrounding the film.

Satlujthe first title was Punjab ’95It is based on the life and work of Jaswant Singh Khalra, who spent years investigating the alleged secret cremations of thousands of unidentified bodies during Punjab’s insurgency years.
