Top Iranian leaders cry at Ayatollah Khamenei’s funeral

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi become emotional during a farewell ceremony for former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran on Friday, as the country began a week of mourning for the late leader. The ceremony, held at Tehran’s Grand Mosallah, marked the beginning of an elaborate funeral for Khamenei, who was killed in US-Israeli strikes on February 28 this year. Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf was seen crying when Araghchi was paying tribute to him.According to Press TV, the ceremony was attended by senior Iranian officials, heads of state and high-level delegations from around the world. Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian, judiciary chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni EJE and Expedient Council Chairman Ayatollah Sadiq Amoli Larijani were among those in attendance.India was represented by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita and Governor of Bihar Lieutenant General (Retd) Syed Ata Hasnain, who expressed condolences on behalf of the country. The Iranian Embassy in India also acknowledged the presence of several Indian political figures, including PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti and Congress leader Salman Khurshid, at the tribute ceremony. Foreign dignitaries included Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon, Turkmenistan’s Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow and Russian Security Council Vice Chairman Dmitry Medvedev, as well as representatives of dozens of other countries.Authorities estimate that 15 to 20 million mourners could attend the multi-day funeral ceremonies. The body will be laid to rest in Tehran’s Grand Moselle before a funeral procession in the capital on Monday. The funeral rites will continue in Qom, Baghdad, Karbala and Najaf before Khamenei is laid to rest in Mashhad on July 9.
