Zeenat Aman says Bollywood has limited her to ‘singing, dancing, getting wet’.
Actress Zeenat Aman said in an interview that her on-screen sex-symbol image never matched her real personality. He also recalled that in the 1970s, filmmakers prioritized his presence rather than his creative input.

Veteran actress Zeenat Aman has opened up about the glaring difference between her glamorous on-screen image and her real personality, saying the “sex symbol” tag that has defined her career never reflected who she really was. In a recent interview, the actor also recalled how filmmakers of that time focused more on his looks than his creative inputs.
Speaking to Shubhra Ayyappa on her YouTube channel, the 74-year-old icon said, “I always found that there was such a disparity between what was projected about me and the person I actually was. The sex-symbol tag stuck with me for a very long time. When people met me, they realized that I was not really like the characters I played.”

Looking back at the film industry of the 1970s, Zeenat said that film sets were largely dominated by men, with their hairdressers often being the only other woman. He said that despite playing the lead role, he had little influence on how his characters were written or presented, as the filmmakers were primarily concerned with his appearance rather than his creative vision.
“Nobody was interested in me being cerebral. They were only interested in will go, will dance, She will speak two dialogues, wet in the rain(Singing, dancing, saying two dialogues, getting wet in the rain),” she said.
royals The actor also reflected on his fashion choices and revealed that exposure to global trends played an important role in shaping his personal style after returning from the US.
She said that costume design was often a collaborative process with renowned designers such as Bhanu Athaiya, but added that her own suggestions were usually given more importance than what the filmmakers had in mind.
When asked if her ideas were ever rejected for being too bold, Zeenat said that the opposite was true. She said, “On the contrary, I think my contribution was always modest, and what people wanted to add wasn’t so modest. It happened in a lot of movies, where they wanted more cleavage, wanted more back show – that came from the production.”
Zeenat was last seen in the 2025 Netflix series, The Royals, starring actors Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar in the lead roles. She will next be seen in Ban Tikki with Abhay Deol and Shabana Azmi.
