‘An Indian and a Pakistani’: JD Vance names two ‘very important’ people in his life as PM Sharif sees it

US Vice President says his wife and Field Marshal Asim Munir are the two “most important” people in his life

US Vice President JD Vance named his wife and second lady Usha Vance and Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir during remarks on the sidelines of US-Iran diplomatic talks in Switzerland, saying the two most important people in his life are an Indian and a Pakistani.Vance said, “I joked that there are two very important people in my life. An Indian and a Pakistani. The Indian is my wife and the Pakistani is Field Marshal Munir.”Vance also said that he “probably talked to Munir more than anyone else in the last 3 months.”His comments were made as US and Iranian officials held the first round of talks with mediators, including delegations from Pakistan and Qatar, at a resort in Switzerland. When Vance made this comment, Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif was also present. The talks were described as a “Lake Lucerne summit”. It focused on efforts to stabilize relations and build on an interim agreement.Vance said the purpose of the discussion was to open a new chapter in relations with Iran. “The question before us now is how much more can we achieve together? Can we make a new beginning?” He said. The Vice President said: “Can we permanently change relations in the Middle East, or can we return to the old way of doing things, that is not our priority, but certainly something that could happen.”He also described the talks as a rare moment in diplomacy. “We look forward to transforming the Middle East through diplomacy and promoting peace as well as the free flow of oil,” he said.Vance said the US and Iran had never held such high-level talks before and said the goal was to create a new relationship framework and improve regional stability. The discussions in Switzerland were aimed at formalizing an interim deal that had already been signed electronically earlier in the week. The agreement aims to reduce tensions, outline sanctions relief and set the stage for long-term negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program. The draft framework also includes Iran’s commitment not to pursue nuclear weapons, as well as proposals for handling enriched uranium under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency. It also outlines possible sanctions relief, reconstruction funding and steps to restore maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz. The process has been plagued with delays and confusion. A planned formal signing ceremony in Switzerland was postponed after the agreement came into force electronically, forcing Pakistani officials to cancel travel arrangements. The Deputy Prime Minister of Pakistan later confirmed that the ceremony would no longer take place.Earlier, Vance had also criticized Pakistan during the discussion on the release of the draft agreement and said that expectations regarding transparency are different in all countries.“So first of all, we really want to bring this out because it’s hard to have a conversation without the full text,” he said.He added: “And I think part of the mess here is that in the Pakistani and Qatari systems, they don’t have the First Amendment and freedom of the press. And so there’s not an expectation that the text will be there for the American people to really interrogate and look at, analyze and understand.”The diplomatic effort comes amid ongoing instability in the region, including tensions involving Israel, Hezbollah and Lebanon, complicating efforts to move forward with a lasting agreement.
