Rajkumar Hirani shuts down ‘4th Idiot’ discussion, confirms 3 Idiots sequel in the works
Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani confirmed that a sequel to 3 Idiots is being written and said that no new characters are being added to the trio. His comments kicked off the discussion of 4 Idiots while hinting at the story taking place 20 years after the original story.

Talking about the film, Hirani shared that although the initial idea is underway, the writing process is still going on. He said, “Aamir had read a very early draft; the overall idea is there. I don’t know… He might be giving some media interviews (and talking about it). But we’re still in the process of writing because we’re also very excited about it.”
The director also addressed speculations about the introduction of a new character in the film and its title 4 idiots. Clarifying that no new ‘idiot’ is joining the gang, Hirani said with a smile, “I also found out that its name is ‘4th Idiots’. I didn’t put it there, the media put it somewhere. (I also came to know that it is being titled 4 Idiots. I did not title it, the media created it). To be honest, there is no fourth idiot, it’s only 3 idiots, it’s 20 years later (from where we finished).”

The sequel has been making headlines ever since reports of a possible continuation of the 2009 blockbuster surfaced. Earlier, Aamir Khan, while talking about the project, had revealed that Hirani had shared an idea with him, and the team was excited to explore the next chapter of the characters’ lives.
The superstar had also hinted that the film will reunite lead characters Rancho, Farhan and Raju after a gap of two decades, but he stressed that the team will only go ahead if they have a strong enough story to justify their return to the world of 3 Idiots.
