OpenAI launches GPT-4o Mini, a cheaper AI model to replace GPT-3.5
OpenAI has launched GPT-4O Mini, a cost-effective and powerful AI model designed to make artificial intelligence more affordable and accessible.
OpenAI has unveiled GPT-4o Mini, a small but powerful AI model designed to make artificial intelligence more affordable and accessible. Priced at just 15 cents per million input tokens and 60 cents per million output tokens, GPT-4o Mini is significantly cheaper than previous models like GPT-3.5 Turbo, providing a cost-effective solution for a variety of applications.
According to the company blog, GPT-4o Mini boasts impressive performance metrics, scoring 82 percent on the MMLU benchmark and outperforming GPT-41 on the LMSYS leaderboard for chat preferences. The model is capable of handling a wide range of tasks due to its low cost and fast response time. It is ideal for applications that require multiple model calls, large amounts of context, or real-time text interactions, such as a customer support chatbot.
Currently, GPT-4o Mini supports text and vision inputs, with plans to include image, video, and audio inputs and outputs in the future, OpenAI mentioned in the blog. It has a reference window of 128K tokens and supports 16K output tokens per request, with knowledge updated until October 2023. Its improved tokenizer also makes handling non-English text more cost-effective.
This model excels in both academic and practical applications, and outperforms other smaller models in reasoning, math, and coding tasks. For example, GPT-4o mini scored 87 percent in mathematical reasoning and 87.2 percent in coding performance on benchmarks such as MGSM and HumanEval, respectively.
OpenAI has incorporated strong security measures into GPT-4O Mini. These include filtering out harmful content during pre-training and using reinforcement learning with human feedback (RLHF) to align the model’s behavior with security policies. More than 70 external experts have tested the model to identify and mitigate potential risks, ensuring its reliability and security.
GPT-4o Mini is now available via the Assistant API, Chat Completion API, and Batch API. It will be available to Free, Plus, and Team users on ChatGPT starting today, while enterprise users will be able to access it next week. OpenAI plans to introduce fine-tuning capabilities for GPT-4o Mini soon.
OpenAI aims to continue reducing costs while enhancing AI capabilities. The introduction of GPT-4o Mini is a step toward integrating powerful AI into everyday applications, making advanced intelligence more accessible and affordable for developers and users.
