Get ready for My Spy: The Eternal City, the sequel to the 2020 comedy My Spy starring Dave Bautista, arriving on Amazon Prime tomorrow.
Directed by Pete Segal, who also directed the first film, it follows CIA operatives JJ (played by Bautista) and Sophie (Chloe Coleman), now grown-up, on a school trip to Italy, where they get caught up in a terrorist plot – a classic move for an action comedy!
My Spy: The Eternal City story plot
Returning from the first film are Ken Jeong from Community and Kristen Schaal from Bob’s Burgers, along with Anna Faris, Craig Robinson and Flula Borg. Directed by Pete Segal, the story picks up five years later when Sophie is now a teenager, eager for independence and part of her school choir’s tour of Italy, which includes a performance in Vatican City.
Despite Sophie’s hopes of a solo adventure, JJ disrupts their plans by volunteering as a chaperone. Soon, they find themselves caught up in a terrorist plot, turning their vacation into a thrilling mission. The first film, My Spy, released during the COVID-19 pandemic, received mixed reviews but a sequel was released in February 2023.
My Spy: The Eternal City Streaming Details
My Spy: The Eternal City will premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on July 18, available only for streaming – not a theatrical release. It will release at 3 a.m. Eastern Time or midnight Pacific Time, which is different from Amazon’s usual midnight GMT release.
You’ll need an Amazon Prime subscription to watch it; it won’t be available to rent or buy online. Unfortunately, it won’t be on Netflix either, as it’s an Amazon Studios/MGM Original.
Dave Bautista on his return for the sequel
Dave Bautista expressed his joy at returning for the sequel, praising the beautiful filming locations and the family atmosphere on set. Bautista said, “I was comfortable with the character from day one, I never had to wonder if I would get along with my cast or director. I was instantly immersed in it.” Both Bautista and Ken Jeong gushed about Chloe Coleman’s role, calling her the heart of the film.
