US diplomat found dead in Myanmar hotel, Thai woman detained: ‘For the sake of honor…’

A US official has been found mysteriously dead in a hotel in Myanmar, and local police have detained a Thai woman in connection with the investigation. Although the incident occurred weeks ago, the State Department has now confirmed the death and said it would not release any other information about the case. “Out of respect for the privacy of the family and loved ones, we have no further information to provide at this time,” the State Department said in an emailed response to questions from The Associated Press. The man was found dead at the Sakura Residence and Hotel about two weeks ago, according to three people in the diplomatic community in Myanmar, who said they were not authorized to discuss the case. This long-term rental hotel is popular with diplomats, business people, and other international visitors, and is located about 1.5 kilometers (1 mi) from the US Embassy. The Thai Embassy in Yangon and Thailand’s Foreign Ministry also declined to say whether they had provided consular assistance to the suspect or provided any other information. When the agency contacted the manager of Sakura Hotel, he also refused to comment.
