Varma wrote, “Till a few weeks ago, the entire industry believed that only big-star, big-budget, VFX spectacle films would be able to draw audiences to theatres, and now Obsession has reset that button.”

He said that the film proved that compelling storytelling and innovative filmmaking could work even without the commercial elements typically associated with theatrical success.

Pointing to the film’s different approach, Varma wrote, “No big stars. No grand locations. No grand production design. No foreign shooting. No top technicians,” adding that despite reports of a very high budget, the film is made on a modest scale.

He wrote, “Its budget is said to be ₹7 crore (Indian), it is easy to see that its net production cost minus technical fees cannot be more than ₹70 lakh, given that it was shot entirely in 3 locations (two rooms in an ordinary house, the interior of a car and the interior of a small store).”

Instead of focusing only on box office Truth The director said that what stood out to him most was the craftsmanship behind the film. He highlighted director Currie Barker’s visual style, editing, and sound design, calling them trailblazing.

RGV also emphasized the use of sound, writing, “His cutting of sharp sound effects (door slamming, sudden laughter, heartbeat) to create rhythmic punctuation is awe-inspiring.”

Concluding his note, Varma said that although the film’s box office performance on a modest budget was remarkable, filmmakers should study its technical work even more closely.
