Originally launched to improve appliances like washing machines and refrigerators, the ThinQ app has evolved. In 2023, LG introduced the ThinQ UP app, which brings even more advanced features and customisation options to users. The app can change the panels of the refrigerator and alert users if too much detergent is added. However, before you get excited about turning your dull grey refrigerator into a bright blue, keep in mind that this feature is exclusive to the Mood UP refrigerator, which has a starting price of Rs 4,49,000 in India.

India Today Tech recently visited LG’s headquarters in South Korea, where the features of the ThinQ UP app were showcased. Although these advanced capabilities come at a price, they completely change the way you interact with your home appliances, reducing your workload to a great extent. Notably, most of the ThinQ UP app-enabled devices are yet to launch in India.

But before we talk about what the ThinQ UP app can do, let’s first understand what this app is- The ThinQ UP app is an extension of the LG ThinQ ecosystem. The app allows you to personalise your LG smart home appliances according to your lifestyle. While the standard ThinQ app focuses on remote control and management, the ThinQ UP takes it a step further by allowing you to download new features and updates, making your appliances better suited to your lifestyle and preferences.

Making washing machines smart

LG’s ThinQ UP app adds a whole new level of intelligence to washing machines. Usually considered boring appliances, these smart washing machines can now alert you if you have used too much detergent. This is not only better for your clothes, but it also helps prevent detergent wastage. For those who are new to using washing machines and may not know how much detergent to use for five pairs of clothes, ThinQ UP-enabled devices handle this problem quite well.

When you buy an LG ThinQ UP 2.0 washing machine, the personalization process begins even before you start using it. LG invites customers to participate in a Life Pattern Analysis survey through the ThinQ app. This simple survey helps understand your lifestyle and washing habits, ensuring that the washing machine is tuned to deliver the best performance for your needs.

The customization doesn’t stop there. Users can rearrange the order of washing cycles and save their personal settings directly in the app. This means you can adjust the settings to suit your laundry needs over time. However, this flexibility is only available with washers that are compatible with the ThinQ UP app.

Much more than a fridge

The ThinQ UP app offers more than just the ability to change the color of your refrigerator. One of its best features is that you can set precise temperatures for different sections of the fridge. This means you can change the cooling settings to suit different types of food, helping to maintain the freshness of food. For example, you can set one temperature for your vegetable drawer so that your veggies stay crisp and another temperature for the dairy compartment so that your milk and cheese stay fresh for longer.

In addition to temperature control, the app allows you to customize the LED lighting inside the refrigerator. This means you can adjust the brightness of the lights to your liking or even change the color. Whether you want a brighter light to easily see everything inside or a softer glow for a more ambient look, the ThinQ UP app lets you customize your fridge’s lighting to be just right.

One of the most interactive features of a ThinQ UP-enabled fridge is the LCD located on the bottom freezer. This display can be used to leave messages or reminders for your family members. Imagine you need to remind your spouse to pick up eggs when they get home. Instead of sending a text or leaving a sticky note, you can simply leave a digital note on the fridge using the app. When your family member opens the freezer, they will see your message reminding them to buy eggs.
