Police said the last location of the victims was traced through a mobile tower near Poladpur. During a search operation in the Ambenali Ghat section on Monday morning, officials spotted the vehicle in a deep ditch. Preliminary investigation suggests that the driver may have lost control of the SUV before it fell into the valley.

According to the police, the victims were aged between 19 and 35 years and had left the Horn in Dapoli around 2 am on Sunday. When they failed to reach Satara, worried family members started searching for them before contacting the police.

Officials have identified the victims as 22-year-old Ritesh Lokhande, 20-year-old Suhas Lokhande, 21-year-old Utkarsh Shingte, 25-year-old Nikhil Shingte, 25-year-old Mahesh Pawar, 21-year-old Aditya Salunkhe, 35-year-old Rajesh Katkar, all residents of Satara, and 19-year-old Ansh Chavan, Ratnagiri.

What did Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis say?

CM Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief over the deaths and said rescue operations were being conducted on a “war footing”.

In a statement, Fadnavis said eight friends were on a trip when their vehicle fell into a gorge about 1,500 feet below. He said the district administration immediately launched rescue and relief operations and formed five teams of seven members each to retrieve the bodies.

The Chief Minister also said that rescue efforts are underway with the help of the National Disaster Response Force and voluntary rescue teams.
