Barbie director Greta Gerwig will be honored with the prestigious Pioneer of the Year Award by the Will Rogers Motion Pictures Pioneers Foundation at the Beverly Hilton. The filmmaker will be given the award for her selfless contribution to the field of motion pictures and the Hollywood industry.
As Deadline reports, this honor is given to candidates who do exceptional work in the field of the motion picture industry and their service to the community is extraordinary. The WRMPPF also provides financial assistance to people in the motion picture business.
Meanwhile, the WRMPPF management team praised Gerwig and had nice words for her ahead of the ceremony to hand over the honour to the filmmaker.
What did the heads of WRMPPF say about Greta Gerwig and her film career?
Jeff Goldstein, chairman of Warner Bros. and co-chairman of the Will Rogers Motion Pictures Foundation, said in a released statement that he believes Gerwig is a brilliant director and looks forward to inspiring audiences. “Greta Gerwig is a dynamic filmmaker with an extraordinary vision who continues to entertain and inspire audiences everywhere,” Goldstein said.
In co-chair remarks, the organization’s president, Kyle Davis, said, “The Will Rogers Pioneers Assistance Fund is proud to celebrate Greta’s accomplishments and present her with the 2024 Pioneer of the Year Award.” Gerwig became recognized in the industry as an acclaimed director after her directorial debut, Lady Bird, was released in theaters.
The film stars Saoirse Ronan and Lucas Hayes. It also features Timothée Chalamet, Laurie Metcalf, Tracy Letts, and Beanie Feldstein.

Greta Gerwig’s Career in Film Direction
Greta Gerwig’s directing career began in 2017 when the actress-filmmaker’s Lady Bird was declared one of the critically acclaimed films of the year. Other films directed by the Oscar-nominated celebrity include Little Women and the 2023 blockbuster Barbie. All of the director’s films have been nominated for Oscars in their respective years.
Lady Bird received nominations for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Little Women was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, and Barbie was nominated for Best Picture.
