Meet Vermithor, Rhaenyra’s new fiery dragon in ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2
‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2, Episode 6 will see the rise of two new dragons – Vermithor and Silverwing. Here’s more about these dragons and what to expect from them when they emerge from the pit.

‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 Episode 6 welcomes two of the greatest dragons in the universe. After Princess Rhaenys is brutally murdered by Aemond and his dragon Vhagar, Team Black is on a mission to find riders for Silverwing and Vermithor – two powerful dragons who live in Dragonmountain and have no one to claim them.
Queen Rhaenyra’s eyes light up with hope of opportunity when her son, Jace, informs her of the possibility of boarding these resting dragons. It is the only way to defeat the one-eyed prince who had previously murdered Rhaenyra’s younger son, Prince Lucrez, and then attacked Rhaenyra and her dragon, Meles, at Rook’s resting place when no one in the battle was expecting him.
The trailer for the next episode gives a glimpse of two massive dragons that are going to change the future for Rhaenyra and Alicent Hightower, the queen widow and the face of Team Green. But, who is this powerful dragon, and why was he hidden after Daemon Targaryen failed to ride him at the end of ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 1?
Who is the new dragon Vermithor in ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2?
While Silverwing is a very friendly dragon, it is Vermithor who is considered as fierce as is needed to face Vhagar (if a face-off occurs between the two dragons). He is a bronze dragon, originally ridden by King Jaehaerys I Targaryen. However, after the king’s death in 103 B.C., Vermithor never accepted anyone as his rider, not even the warrior prince Daemon, who tried his best to ride him in the first season. Things changed during ‘Dance of the Dragons’ when Rhaenyra and her son, Jaehaerys, announced an event called the ‘Sowing of the Seeds’.
Since no one from direct Targaryen and Valyrian lineage could tame the dragon, the queen called for men to claim Vermithor and Silverwing. Several dragonseeds (bastards of Valyrian lineage) attended the event, and one man named Hugh Hammer succeeded in riding Vermithor. The whole episode of finding a rider for the dragon was not only interesting, but set the stage for one of the most memorable scenes of ‘Dance of the Dragons.’
Vermithor is believed to be a fiery dragon. All who tried to tame him were burned in flames. In fact, just before accepting Hugh Hammer as his rider, Vermithor burned Lord Gorman Massey, who attempted to approach him in the Dragonpit. Vermithor snapped the neck of Hammer, the blacksmith’s son, the next moment.
It will be interesting to see the rise of new dragons, especially Vermithor, and his journey to fight for the ‘Queen Who Was Promised’. Whether this beginning leads to the end of Vhagar and Prince Aemond will be decided by the final episode.
‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 is still three episodes away from its grand finale.
