Ahead of his first Met Gala appearance, Karan Johar said he hopes to meet Sabrina Carpenter and take a selfie with her daughter Roohi. The filmmaker revealed that his daughter is crazy about the singer.
Before making his debut at the 2026 Met Gala, Karan Johar had already revealed what meant the most to him that evening: meeting singer Sabrina Carpenter for the sake of his daughter. The filmmaker said the red carpet moment was special, but a selfie with Carpenter would be the best gift for his nine-year-old daughter Roohi, who is a fan of the singer.

Speaking during an interaction at the Empire State Building, Johar said that the event means more to him than just fashion. He also reflected on his long fascination with the Met Gala, his early years in fashion, and the outfit he chose for the occasion as he arrived at one of the world’s most-watched style events for the first time.
A private moment before the red carpet
Johar talked about his children, twins Yash and Roohi, and shared the reason he hopes to meet Carpenter. He said, “Can I be honest? I am the father of twins Yash and Roohi, they are both 9 years old. My daughter is crazy about Sabrina Carpenter. If I could meet her and take a selfie with her, that would be the best gift.”
He also described the Met Gala as a personal milestone. The director said he has followed the show over the years, including when it was not widely discussed in India. “I’ve tracked the Met Gala for years and always wondered what it would be like to be on that carpet, where every look tells a story and reflects so much artistry,” he said.
From costume design to film production
Recalling his early days in the industry, Johar said that his journey started in fashion before completely venturing into cinema. She said, “I started out as a costume designer when I was about 22, but being on a film set made me realize that filmmaking really excites and inspires me.”
Karan Johar’s Met Gala look
For his first appearance at the 2026 Met Gala, Johar wore a custom Manish Malhotra dress inspired by Indian art and craftsmanship. The ensemble was inspired by the works of Raja Ravi Varma and was in line with the evening’s theme, “Costume Art”, and dress code, “Fashion is Art”.
The look, titled Framed in Eternity, featured the 53-year-old filmmaker in a structured, power-shouldered vintage jacket with a hand-painted cape that extended nearly six feet. This cape was made by a team of more than 80 artisans in 85 days.
