Hollywood horror film Lee Cronin’s The Mummy continued to perform well at the Indian box office and earned Rs 10 crore. Earned around Rs 1.75 crore on second Friday. This represents a decline of at least 12 percent from the opening day last week. The total for 8 days is Rs. ₹18.75 crore (USD 2 million) approx. It is expected to earn around Rs 10 crore in the second weekend. 8 crores, making its total earning around Rs. 25 crores till Sunday. It could probably go for Rs. The total grossed Rs 35-40 crores, which would be an excellent result for such a small budget film.
This business is largely driven by South India, and even there, it is Tamil Nadu which is performing very well. Yesterday, the state’s collection stood at more than 40 per cent. It was 20-25 per cent during the first weekend, which gradually increased on weekdays to now almost half of the all-India business. Typically, Tamil Nadu contributes close to 10 per cent for Hollywood releases, with markets like Mumbai, Delhi-UP and Mysore leading the way. Here, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are at the forefront, with only the Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions of these two states collecting more than English and Hindi across India. This highlights the broad appeal of horror films, even though it is typically the high-end centers that drive the Hollywood box office.
The Mummy trilogy was huge in India in the past. The 1999 film grossed approximately Rs. 20 crores, with the sequel making Rs. Rs 27 crore in 2001. 48 crores in 2008. All of these adjust to or around Rs. Rs 200 crore today. Although the film is not part of that franchise, the familiar title likely helped with early recognition. Despite this, the film could be a hit and would be the second film of the year for Hollywood in India.
