Veteran filmmaker David Dhawan is likely to direct his last film ‘Hai Jawaani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’ with his son Varun Dhawan. Dhawan expressed pride in Varun’s growth as an actor.

Veteran filmmaker David Dhawan has praised his son, actor Varun Dhawan, as they collaborate on the film If you are young then you have to fall in love. The director emphasized their strong bond and mutual respect both on and off screen. Dhawan hinted that the project could potentially be his last directorial venture.
In a conversation with ANI, Dhawan discussed their relationship while working together, and also pointed out the deep mutual respect between them. “A director always wants a good actor, that’s the first priority. He’s not just my son; he questions, he understands, and he’s already done 13-14 films. We get along really well, and I said as long as I’m making it, it would be good to make one or two with my son,” Dhawan sheds light on their professional equation.

Despite his family ties, Dhawan maintains a professional approach on the sets. He said, “When I’m behind the camera, he’s not my son, he’s an actor. I just want results.” He said that their understanding helps in smooth cooperation. He also addressed Varun’s playful complaints about not getting the complete script, saying, “In our times, films were made on trust. Even actors like Salman Khan or Govinda or Sanjay Dutt didn’t always listen to the complete script. We narrated the scenes and that’s how films were made.”
Reflecting on Varun’s growth as an actor, Dhawan praised his emotional range and performance in ‘Border 2’ and described him as brilliant in the film.
In a candid revelation, Dhawan suggested that If you are young then you have to fall in love This may be his last directorial venture. Hinting at health concerns, Dhawan said, “I don’t think I should do anything else. This could be my last film… After this, I will just be Varun’s father.”
Dhawan also recounted an emotional incident during the shooting of the film and how Varun supported him when his health deteriorated. He said, “I was very unwell during the shooting of this film. Varun took great care of me, he had the numbers of all the doctors, he kept in touch with them and was always with them. He is a complete family man.”
With a career spanning over three decades and over 45 films, Dhawan expressed satisfaction on his journey by working with stars like Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, Govinda and Salman Khan. Dhawan credits his mentor, filmmaker and director Manmohan Desai, for shaping his filmmaking style.
