Stepping up its crackdown on one of the most high-profile piracy cases in recent times, the Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing has arrested three key accused in connection with the online leaks of Jana Nayakan.

The arrests were made on April 15 following a detailed technical investigation into the leak, which came to light days before the film was to be cleared by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The case, registered earlier this month, has already led to six arrests related to the dissemination and uploading of pirated content.

According to officials, the main accused was working as a freelance assistant editor on another project, but allegedly gained unauthorized access to footage of Jan Nayakan in an editing studio. Investigators believe the individual copied reels of the film, processed the data into a complete version and then shared it with others, allowing its rapid dissemination in piracy networks.

All three accused were produced in the court and sent to judicial custody.

The development comes days after the Madras High Court granted an interim injunction to internet service providers and cable operators to stop them from streaming or telecasting any unauthorized or uncertified version of the film.

Jana Nayagan, widely seen as Thalapathy Vijay’s final film before his political transition, suffered a major blow when high-definition clips – including crucial scenes – started circulating online on April 9. The completed film soon appeared on several illegal platforms, dealing a significant blow to the big-budget project.

Authorities have since removed hundreds of piracy links as part of an ongoing effort to stem the damage. Authorities have also warned that accessing or sharing pirated content could lead to legal action, urging the public to report such cases through official cyber crime channels.

Meanwhile, the Madras High Court has issued a temporary order against the circulation of unlawful, unauthenticated copy of Jan Nayakan on social media, online platforms and cable television.
