Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry called ‘hypocrites’ for drinking from plastic cups at Coachella: ‘You got them banned in Canada’

Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry are facing criticism after being seen drinking from plastic cups during an outing at the Coachella music festival, despite the former Canadian prime minister’s previous push to ban single-use plastics. The pair have been romantically linked since mid-2025 and attended the first weekend of the California festival, with Perry sharing photos and videos on Instagram showing them spending time together amid the crowd.Photos posted by Perry show the couple walking hand-in-hand around the festival grounds, as well as sitting down and having breakfast between performances. In several clips, the two were seen holding red plastic cups while watching the performance, including a clip taken during Justin Bieber’s headline set.The photos went viral on Twitter, where some users accused Trudeau of hypocrisy.During his time in office, Trudeau’s government announced a ban on certain single-use plastics in June 2019. The federal rules went into effect in December 2022 and target items such as checkout bags, cutlery, stir sticks and some food-service ware. The sales restrictions were later extended through December 2023. This policy was introduced to reduce plastic pollution and protect wildlife and oceans.Following the Coachella images, users on Twitter questioned why Trudeau was seen drinking from a plastic cup in a public location associated with a high-profile environmental agenda. One user wrote, “And this a**hole is drinking alcohol from plastic cups, after the ban was imposed in the entire country.”However, others defended the former prime minister, arguing that he had no control over what was served at the celebration. One user said: “What should he do in this situation? Reject the drink? He would have no other mechanism.”Also, it’s important to note that not all plastic cups are banned under Canadian regulations. The restrictions focus on specific types of harmful single-use plastics, including certain food-service items made from materials such as expanded polystyrene foam and PVC, while other plastic products will remain legal.
