Indian-origin Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy Yash Patel has been arrested in Jurupa Valley, California, on suspicion of off-duty sexual assault and false imprisonment, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department announced. The arrest earlier this month followed an investigation into the allegations by the Sheriff’s Bureau of Special Investigations.Patel began his employment with the Sheriff’s Department in July 2021 and was most recently assigned to the Robert Presley Detention Center as a corrections deputy, officials said.According to the Sheriff’s Department, Patel was placed on paid administrative leave pending an administrative investigation. The Sheriff’s Department announced, “The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office holds its employees to the highest standards of professionalism and accountability. Allegations of misconduct are taken seriously and thoroughly investigated.”Patel was previously named in a lawsuit filed by family members of inmates who died in the county’s jails in 2022-2023. The lawsuits alleged that Sheriff’s Department employees were not adequately trained to prevent or effectively intervene in medical emergencies and inmate violence. Robert Robinson, 41, died within a day in 2022 at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside. Corrections officers Yash Patel, Joshua Phaneuf and Florin Blaz were named as defendants in the lawsuit.
