Steam Deck out of stock in many regions, memory shortage may be to blame

Speculation on what Steam Deck 2 will be like has been put to rest – people are now more focused on what’s happening with the current generation Steam Deck – it’s out of stock in many regions.

Valve hasn’t made an official statement yet, but last night Steam stores in the US and Canada started showing all three variants of the deck as “out of stock.” This is no surprise for the LCD model, which was discontinued in December and may have been sold out. But the two OLED versions (512GB and 1TB) still represent the current (and now only) models of the Steam Deck.

This is a shortage not only in North America, but also in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan. However, there are still units in stores in Europe, with both storage options available.

There is a Reddit thread where people post the status of their orders. We are seeing some successful orders from the US on that thread that were placed in the last few days. Have you tried purchasing a Steam Deck recently? How did that go, leave us a comment. You can also keep an eye on this megathread to see what people from multiple areas are saying.

Again, Valve hasn’t clarified the situation, but the culprit seems obvious – rising memory prices. Valve does not have the same volume as other hardware manufacturers, so it may be more sensitive to component shortages.

And while we’re still waiting for official word, it’s worth taking a look at the Steam Machine and Steam Frame VR – which were announced in November, but Valve kept their prices under wraps. Last week the company announced that their release had been pushed back and didn’t even set a concrete timeline for the launch, let alone disclose pricing.

This is a clear sign that the component market is unpredictable and Valve probably doesn’t want to commit to deadlines and prices that it may not be able to keep.

To put things in perspective, analysts are reporting that memory (DRAM, NAND and HBM) prices in Q1 2026 are 80%-90% higher than last quarter. And that’s not even the roof.
