The gloves are off. AI companies are leaving no stone unturned to attract more users to their platforms. Anthropic has released four new commercials on YouTube, one of which will be shown during the Super Bowl. These ads indirectly take a dig at OpenAI for showing ads in ChatGPT. And Sam Altman has responded.

Anthropic has uploaded four commercials to YouTube that show an AI in human form giving advice to a person on various topics, be it family relationships, business ideas or writing an essay. First, the AI responds as you expect and makes appropriate suggestions.

However, soon, the chatbot starts talking like it’s promoting an app or service, like creating your dating profile, or giving you credit. And when the user gets confused, the video ends with the text, “Ads are coming to AI. But not to the cloud.” Note that the ads never mention OpenAI or ChatGPT directly.

What did Sam Altman say?

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, wrote a long post on X. He started off on a lighter note, saying that the commercials made him laugh. However, Altman alleged that Anthropic was “dishonest” with these advertisements. He wrote, “We would obviously never run ads the way Anthropic portrays them. We’re not stupid and we know our users would reject it.”

Altman took a quote from George Orwell’s famous novel 1984 to explain how his AI rival had shown ads. He said, “It’s on the brand to use a misleading ad to criticize anthropic doublespeak for theoretically misleading ads that aren’t real.”

Although Sam Altman did not explicitly explain how ChatGPT will show ads, OpenAI chatbots are expected to place ads below the generated text. According to the AI startup, during initial tests, ads are also likely to be clearly labeled.

Sam Altman says more people use ChatGPT in Texas than total cloud users in the United States

The co-founder of OpenAI also did not shy away from taking a dig at Anthropic. He claimed that ChatGPT’s free user base in Texas alone is greater than all cloud users in the US combined. However, he said that the business models of both the companies are different.

While Anthropic had an “expensive product for rich people”, Altman claimed that OpenAI “wants to bring AI to the billions of people who can’t pay for a subscription.”

Additionally, Sam Altman said that Anthropic was trying to control how people use AI. “They block companies they don’t like from using their coding product (including ours),” he said. Anthropic has blocked access to its models on the AI coding platform Cursor to rival AI companies, including OpenAI and Elon Musk’s XAI (now part of SpaceX).
