Bot rebellion? Elon Musk says Optimus will be the first robot to replicate itself and build a civilization
After claiming to end poverty and make working optional, Elon Musk now says his Optimus robot will soon be able to replicate itself and build civilization.
Optimus robots may someday become so capable that they may be able to “produce” and create entire civilizations on their own, preferably on other planets. If all this sounds very filmy to you, you’re not alone. But you should know that Elon Musk and company are already thinking about it and may get there sooner than you think. If Musk is able to achieve this extraordinary engineering feat – Optimus could become the world’s first ‘von Neumann machine’.
What is a von Neumann machine?
Now, who is von Neumann? John von Neumann was a famous mathematician who first envisioned a world where machines could replicate and create copies of themselves. The concept dates back to 1945 and has since made its way to the big screen through countless fantasy films, but it has yet to become a reality. With the recent merger of Musk’s flagship companies SpaceX and XAI and his vision of establishing data centers in space and hubs and colonies on the Moon and Mars, conversations have intensified about how all this could lead to von Neumann machines.
The conversation heated up when NodeJS creator Ryan Dahl entered the chat. Dahl, who recently said the era of humans coding by hand is over, asked Citing a post from SpaceX announcing the merger, Dahl wrote, “Terawatt AI compute launched every year?? If this becomes real, it’s one of the weirdest sci-fi timelines imaginable. Is this how the von Neumann probe starts?”
Is Optimus the first von Neumann machine?
Musk quickly responded, confirming, “Yes. Optimus will be the first von Neumann machine capable of building a civilization on its own on any viable planet,” though in another post, he was more cautious, saying, “But there will obviously be a lot of work to do before Optimus will be able to do that.” He called Optimus “the greatest product” that mankind will ever create. So, is Optimus the first von Neumann machine? not yet. But this may happen in future.
As Optimus reaches the stage of the von Neumann machine – it will become so smart that it will be able to detect and recognize its own obstacles, quickly fix them, and will also be able to use locally obtained parts and materials to build other robots and habitats. When all of this is achieved on a large scale, we are essentially seeing a robot civilization emerge. It is sure to happen far away from Earth. On Earth itself, Musk is working on a future where Optimus robots will make working optional and eliminate poverty forever. To speed up the entire process, Musk is doubling resources to launch Optimus on a mass market for people to live and experience. As of now, these robots are at the pilot and testing stage.
