Google launches Project Genie, Sundar Pichai says it’s out of this world, here’s why
Google has released Project Genie, a new AI tool that allows users to create their own interactive worlds. Google CEO Sundar Pichai says he has been playing with the tool and believes it is out of this world.

Google has released its latest AI-powered web app Project Genie that will allow users to create their own interactive worlds. This tool can help you use your creativity to create new worlds that you can not only see, but also explore. Google CEO Sundar Pichai has revealed that he has been toying with the tool himself, calling it “out of this world.”
Sundar Pichai shares his world with Project Genie
At X, Sundar Pichai announced the release of the app. He said Project Genie was powered by Genie 3, its AI world generation model that was released last year as “a limited research preview”. “Project Genie Genie 3 is a prototyping web app powered by Nano Banana Pro + Gemini that lets you create your own interactive world,” Pichai wrote.
The Google chief also shared a clip of an astronaut exploring a space station in Earth orbit, created with Project Genie. Sundar Pichai agreed that like the shared videos, the web app is also out of this world. He added, “I’ve been playing with it a bit and it’s out of this world :)”

How to create your own world in Project Genie?
Project Genie works like any other AI tool, but with a few steps. The first step is ‘world sketching’. You just need to provide text prompts or images, and the AI can use the information to generate not only environments or characters, but also create custom worlds. Images may also be of a real-world object such as a toy. Google has integrated Nano Banana Pro with Project Genie to allow better visuals.
Once generated, users can explore and interact with the environment from a variety of perspectives, including first-person or third-person views.
As you explore a custom world, the AI generates the environment as you navigate in real-time. Google claims that the model simulates physics and interactions to create a realistic experience.
However, you can also remix the world. Users can select from a set of existing worlds on the platform, and modify them with custom prompts.
Note that you can explore the generated world only for 60 seconds. Google also warns that sometimes the creations may not look “fully realistic” and that users may “experience high latency in controlling” the characters.
Why did Google release Project Genie?
For now, Project Genie is only available to Google’s AI Ultra customers in the US. According to Diego Rivas of Google DeepMind, the company released the feature as an experimental tool to see how people use it. “It’s really an opportunity for us to learn about new use cases that we hadn’t thought about,” he told The Verge.
Google believes that Project Genie could also enable robots to navigate in the real world in the future.
