OpenAI comes out with new ChatGPT translation tool, how to use and other details after Google

OpenAI is building a brand new translation tool, “ChatGPT Translate”, possibly to compete with Google Translate. It is now available for use and supports multiple Indian languages including Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

OpenAI has quietly launched a new translation tool for ChatGPIT users. Translation is not new to ChatGPT users. Anyone can fire up the app and ask ChatGPT to translate text, but the new update is standalone, in the same way Google Translate is, meaning it’s a dedicated space designed just for translation with some additional AI features. It appears, at least in the beginning of what it can do, that OpenAI is trying to create a super-charged Google Translate – another example of OpenAI coming in, or trying to eat Google’s lunch.

In its current state, ChatGPT supports translation into multiple languages, including Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu. This tool is only accessible on browsers, phones, and desktops. You can switch from translation to ChatGPT, but not the other way around, as at the time of writing this indicates it is still a work in progress. Similarly, there is an option to detect languages, but the tool lacks a microphone toggle. It doesn’t allow you to upload audio or documents yet. What it does – for now – allows basic translations and then adds a juicy mix of AI to it so that, for example, you can ask it to change the tone of your output to a more fluent or formal one. You can make your translations easy for children to understand or tune it specifically for an academic audience.

How to use ChatGPT Translate

Type ChatGPT Translate in your browser. Once you get to a screen with two boxes side by side, type the text you want to translate into the left box. You don’t have to choose a language; The AI bot can automatically detect that part. The next option is to choose the language you want it to be translated into. Almost immediately, the translated text will appear. The language will be standard and simple.

Below the two translation boxes, you’ll find simple prompts. By using these prompts, one can make the translation more fluent. For example, you can rewrite the same translation in a business-formal tone, a childlike tone, or a sophisticated academic tone. Selecting any option immediately redirects users to the main ChatGPT interface with pre-filled prompts, enabling deep customization through Generative AI. You can change the tone or phrasing as per your requirement.

Google Translate offers more functionality when it comes to plain translation, especially when it comes to language support and the ability to upload images and documents, but it has been around for a longer time. Since OpenAI has not made any official announcements, it is likely that it is testing the waters before wide availability and more updates will follow.
