The launch of Google’s Pixel 9 series is just a few weeks away, and anticipation for the new generation of Google devices is high. While plenty of renders are already circulating that paint a picture of what we can expect from the series, a new report suggests that Google’s upcoming Pixel 9 series will include an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, addressing long-standing issues with the under-display fingerprint technology used in previous Pixel models.

Since the Pixel 6, many users have reported persistent problems with optical under-display fingerprint sensors, criticizing their slow and unreliable performance. These sensors, provided by Goodix, operate in a bright light to capture an image of the fingerprint and reportedly struggle with speed and accuracy, especially in low light conditions and when fingers are moist or dirty. Now according to Android Authority, Google plans to solve these problems with the Pixel 9 series by switching to Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Gen 2 ultrasonic fingerprint scanner (QFS4008), the same technology used in Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Unlike optical scanners, ultrasonic fingerprint scanners use inaudible sound waves to create a detailed 3D map of the fingerprint, making them faster and more reliable in a variety of conditions. The 3D Sonic Gen 2 scanner has an 8x8mm surface area, which is significantly larger than its predecessor, helping to place the finger easier and capture more biometric data. This upgrade is expected to provide a smoother and more consistent unlocking experience for Pixel 9 users.

However, the new ultrasonic fingerprint sensor is said to only come with the Pixel 9 series—the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and possibly a new Pixel 9 XL that will be unveiled on August 13—and not with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which will retain a side-mounted sensor integrated into the power button.

Nevertheless, the Pixel 9 Pro models are expected to offer significant upgrades in design, performance, and functionality, including a new display with higher refresh rates and better colour accuracy, available in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch sizes. A new design with fewer camera bars, Adaptive Touch feature, and four colour options are expected. The devices will be powered by the Tensor G4 chip, which promises better performance and AI capabilities, along with up to 16GB of RAM for better multitasking.

In terms of photography, the Pixel 9 models will likely feature a triple-lens setup with advanced computational photography capabilities and a larger sensor supporting variable aperture. Advanced AI features like Magic Editor and Gemini Nano AI are expected to offer cutting-edge photo and video editing tools. The Pixel Fold is expected to share many of these specifications, including a high-resolution flexible display and refined design, possibly including a white colour option.
